Discourse is hiring editorial and other staff to support national growth

Please apply by Nov. 30, 2017.

At Discourse Media, we're building a cross-country investigative journalism network.

In spring 2018, Discourse Media is going national with a revamped — and expanded — digital product offering the highest-quality investigative journalism to Canadians. We’re looking for talented colleagues to join us in making this happen.

From our base in Vancouver, Discourse has already reached millions with our innovative model of community-based investigative journalism. We feel the time is now right for a national investigative journalism company that can help to expand and improve public discourse. So we’re seeking reporters, investigative producers, an associate producer, a sales manager and an executive assistant to help us build a cross-country journalism network covering a variety of issues relevant to Canadians.

We think of journalism as a service. Rather than covering the same breaking news events as other outlets, we devote our resources to stories, issues and communities where there is an acute need for information, journalistic probing and storytelling. Like this investigation on the hidden impacts of Canada’s “shadow population” of transient workers. Or this story on how severe court delays for child protection cases are harming families.

If you share this perspective, we’d love to hear from you. Below you’ll find an overview of the positions we’re recruiting for, along with links to more information on each one.

We look forward to receiving your application.

Reporters

Each year, our reporters produce several major journalism investigations driven by community engagement. We’re looking for journalists who have already established a level of expertise on a specific issue.

To begin with, we’re targeting the following four beat areas: money/business; urban issues; criminal justice; technology and society. But we’d also love to hear your ideas: What issues do you think would benefit from this kind of in-depth coverage in Canada? If you’re an experienced reporter focused on a particular area we want to hear from you. Find out more and apply.

Investigative Producers

Our investigative producers work closely with reporters to help them plan and shape their coverage for the greatest possible impact and engagement. They also work collaboratively with other producers to devise new editorial and engagement strategies. Alongside strong journalism experience, leadership abilities and proven planning and problem-solving skills are a must. Find out more and apply.

Associate Producer, Social & Digital

The associate producer will help us build our online community and support the production of our in-depth investigations. The associate producer has an important role to play in managing our social accounts day-to-day, tracking and interpreting social performance metrics, and packaging our investigations for maximum impact. Find out more and apply.

Sales Manager

As a key member of the business development team, the sales manager will support various Discourse editorial and data products in the North American market. The successful candidate will work directly with current and prospective customers to help Discourse meet its sales targets. Find out more and apply.

Executive Assistant

The executive assistant will provide high-level administrative and organizational support to our four-person executive team, as well as developmental assistance in securing government and technology grants. Find out more and apply.
