The Lunch Beat

A collaboration with Farm to Cafeteria Canada and The Social Planning and Research Council of BC

One of Discourse Media’s first experimental projects, The Lunch Beat was produced by co-founder Colleen Kimmett. It is the product of a research partnership with Farm to Cafeteria Canada, a national network focused on increasing access to healthy, local and sustainably-grown foods in public institutions such as schools and hospitals.

The aim of the project — a seven-part series of written feature stories — was to examine the individuals, organizations and communities across the country (both within and outside the Farm to Cafeteria network) that are working toward this goal. Our objective was to give readers a better understanding of the challenges that exist in the institutional food system today.

A research partnership with Farm to Cafeteria offered Colleen insight and access to a vast network of communities struggling to improve access to healthy, local and sustainably-grown food. The Lunch Beat helped us to understand the potential that lies in fostering these types of research partnerships and also learn to navigate the barriers they present.

From her body of research, Colleen also explored leads that contributed to stories in the Globe and Mail and beyond. Read her story about how New Brunswick schools are bucking the trend and providing healthier lunches.
