Every year publications like Maclean’s and U.S. News & World Report publish university rankings aimed at helping high school students and their parents make the big decision about where to pursue higher education.

The Canadian University Report is an annual publication of the Globe and Mail that provides students and parents with information about 62 universities in Canada. Discourse Media collects and analyses qualitative and quantitative data about the quality of undergraduate education at Canada’s universities and produces an editorial package based on that information.

The 2016 Canadian University Report goes beyond comparative rankings by focusing on how Canada’s universities are helping undergraduate students develop into the future leaders and creators who will make change.

Too many young people leave the post secondary system without the skills, experience and knowledge to make real impact − whether that be through the sciences or humanities, private or nonprofit sectors. Many universities are rising to this challenge; they are creating opportunities for students to make real change in their communities, to gain real world work experiences, to apply concepts of sustainability and social justice no matter their field of study, and to grow as global citizens.

Through profiles of students, we show examples of how they are taking their education and applying it outside the walls of classroom in their communities and beyond.

We investigate how university graduates are creating their own jobs and funding their own education, what steps aboriginal students are calling for in reconciliation and how universities are responding to campus safety concerns.
